Arsenopyrite is likely responsible for the high levels of arsenic found in the water wells of southern Hillsborough county.

ARSENOPYRITE var Danaite   Franconia, NH
3.5 mm crystal
Species:           ARSENOPYRITE var Danaite
Locality:          Franconia, NH
Specimen Size: 3.5 mm crystal
Field Collected: Acquired by Gene Bearss through trade. Gifted to Tom Mortimer
Catalog No.: TBC
Notes: A nifty little crystal. It would be valuable if more was known about its history and locality. Gene stated he acquired this specimen from a 1976 swap. The label said "Cobaltite." Lacking NH cobaltite specimens in other collections, the cobaltite identification of this specimen was suspect. However, a historical reference (Hayes, American Journal of Science #24, pg. 386, 1833) to cobalt rich arsenopyrite ("Danaite") in Franconia, NH gives some credence to a cobaltite identification. Mindat includes a page dedicated to cobaltian arsenopyrite: ( mindat.org link) giving a chemistry ranging from (Fe0.90Co0.10)AsS to (Fe0.65Co0.35)AsS
Philip Morrill in his New Hampshire Mines and Mineral Localities lists "danaite" for both the Franconia Iron Mine (listed under the town of Lisbon, but it is actually in Sugar Hill) and under "General" minerals for the town of Franconia.
A January, 2014 EDS analysis showed this small crystal to be arsenopyrite, but with a small measurable amount of cobalt, very likely exceeding the ten percent substitution required for danaite. Therefore, it is reasonable to identify this specimen as "arsenopyrite var. danaite."
